Most corporate privacy policies are long, boring, and written at a level less than 5% of American adults can read.
Finding a company with a decent privacy policy would take hours of intense effort so very few people even think about privacy.
People make purchasing decisions without taking privacy into account so companies get away with violating your privacy.
Today, companies make money by trafficking everyone's data. They do so without suffering any backlash because what they are doing is buried in "legalese" in a 15+ page privacy policy that few have the ability, and no one has the time to read. Selling your data is "free money" to them because there are no consequences... yet.
We need to make comparing privacy policies quick and easy so people can factor privacy into their purchasing decisions (along with cost & quality) and reward companies that respect their privacy.
Business Reform is hard at work using AI to summarize long, difficult to read privacy policies into simple "nutrition label" style tables that makes it easy to compare privacy policies of companies within a given industry such as airlines or hotels.
If enough people start making privacy considerations a part of their purchasing decision, and financially rewarding companies that respect and preserve our privacy, SOME companies will alter their behavior to attract and retain privacy conscious customers because the cost of lost customers will exceed the "free money" they gain from violating your privacy. Short of Congress passing laws to protect our privacy, this is our best way to fight back against companies engaged in "Surveillance Capitalism".
